We are a Crown entity established under the Climate Change Response (Zero Carbon) Amendment Act. Our Commissioners were announced by the Minister for Climate Change, Hon James Shaw, on 17 December 2019.

We are a team of experts who supply sound evidence-based advice to the government on how to transition to a low emissions economy. Our research and analysis allow us to provide advice to the government on reducing New Zealand’s Greenhouse Gas emissions. This advice helps to shape New Zealand’s approach to mitigating the effects of climate change.

Our team comes from a range of broad backgrounds, including economics, public policy, emissions trading, resource management, physics, engineering, climate science and behavioral science. Supporting our team is our board of seven commissioners, who also come from varying fields such as adaptation, agriculture, economics, and the Māori-Crown relationship.
