2024 review of the 2050 emissions target

This is our first review of Aotearoa New Zealand’s 2050 emissions target.

Overview

To ensure that the 2050 target remains fit for purpose, the Commission is required to review it every five years and provide independent expert advice to the government of the day on whether any changes should be made.

We are currently working on our first such review, alongside our advice on the fourth emissions budget period (2036–2040), and our review on whether emissions from international aviation and shipping should be included in the 2050 target.

We have released a discussion document on this review and will be consulting between 8 April and 31 May 2024.
