Response to Budget 2020

Climate change now needs to be our focus for future investments. This is a time of huge uncertainty, but also of opportunity.

We recognise the extraordinary conditions that drove this year’s Budget.

Budget 2020 was delivered against the backdrop of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

COVID-19 created a lot of uncertainty, but in our view the investment needed to stimulate the economy also presented many opportunities. We provided a response to Government on Budget 2020 saying that we believe New Zealanders would like to see more courage and innovation in future budgets for addressing climate change.

We feel strongly that while the decisions outlined in the Budget are important, it is the decisions that will be made as a result of it in the weeks and months to come that will have the lasting impact.

While some investments go some way to helping us achieve our climate change goals, this Budget does not take us far enough. We need to do more.

This economic stimulus is the biggest in our lifetimes - if we can make smart investment decisions we can rebuild the economy, create jobs, and ensure people are better off both now and in the future.
