Submission: Natural and Built Environments Bill

Our submission to Parliament's Environment Select Committee on proposed reforms to the Resource Management Act (February 2023)

7 February 2023

In 2021, the Government announced its intention to repeal the Resource Management Act 1991 (the RMA) and reform Aotearoa New Zealand's resource management system through three bills.

In February 2023, the Commission provided a submission to Parliament's Environment Select Committee on one of these bills: the Natural and Built Environment Bill.

We provided this submission in line with our role to provide independent expert advice on the direction of climate policy. In particular, the new legislation will impact how land use, infrastructure and other environmental decisions are made – all of which have important implications for mitigating and adapting to climate change.
