Advice on the fourth emissions budget (2036–2040)

What should the maximum quantity of emissions for this five-year period be? Is there a need to revise emissions budgets one, two and three?

Overview

Every five years, the Commission reviews Aotearoa New Zealand's emissions budgets that have already been set, and recommends the maximum level of the next emissions budget.

We are preparing our advice on the fourth emissions budget, for the period 2036–2040. At the same time, we are assessing if there is a need to revise emissions budgets one, two, and three. These collectively cover the period 2022–2035, and have already been set by the Government.

We have released our draft advice on this and will be consulting between 8 April and 31 May 2024.
